The Case of the Broken Default Domain Policy

So over the last couple of days, I decided as part of my server virtualization project at home with my new hard disks, I would rename the domain to something more suitable.

I found a tool on the Microsoft site called rendom.exe along with a few other tools for renaming a domain. I read all of the instructions and had a plan set out for doing it, and the process was fairly painless due to only having one Domain Controller, so there was no need to wait for forest and domain replication to take place.

Long Time No Post, but PDC Rocks

So it’s been a while since I wrote anything on here since my latest outbursts against Virgin Media due to their inability to provide us with broadband, and low and behold we still don’t have our super fast 20MB internet.

Virgin rescheduled us for late October and the day before the appointment called to cancel because there is no T-Piece outside our property and they need to get council planning permission to install the piece so we are now going to be waiting until November 14th.

Why on earth they couldn’t have just seen in advance that they needed this piece and that they could have done the work in the three weeks between our first and most recent appointments I don’t know! Bless their little cotton socks.

Apple Fan Boys Desert

No, I’m not talking about a group of Apple fans sat around eating cake, I’m talking about a lot of Apple fans seeming to be quite annoyed with Mr Jobs and his crew and it would seem to be sparked by the iPhone 2.0 firmware and MobileMe.

I was doing the normal rounds with a quick read of some of my RSS feeds and found this article.

I sounded like a topic to start a row between the fan boys, the Microsoft lovers (that’s me) and the people sitting on the fence and staying the hell out of it. I read down to the comments and wow – This is the first time I have ever seen Apple fans actually taking words against Apple, so come on down the big M and enjoy the view.

PS: Did I mention that LiveMesh is free, works on PC, mobile devices via m.mesh.com and soonwill be supporting mobile devices using an actual client and Mac support too. Did I say it was free?

Mix ’08 and My Thoughts

Late last night, I watched some interesting content from the Mix ’08 show from Microsoft. I took the time to watch the two keynote presentations, firstly introducing Microsoft’s new web technologies and the second being an interview with Steve Ballmer.

Whilst I am not a developer, there are some things which do realy excite me when it comes down to web development and the new functionality which people are driving through sites like social networking and the demand for richer, faster and more integrated web experiences, and for me, a lot of the things that came up in the Mix ’08 keynotes did it for me.

Irony

So Jackie has managed to break her laptop and get XP into a reboot loop, so I thought I would Google the problem quickly before I attempt to replace the majority of the system files to fix the problem.

After Googling it, I found a link to a site which suggested the fix for the problem. I can’t remember the link for the site, but the site was the site for an MVP (Microsoft Valuable Professional) who is basically someone who provides support for people on the Microsoft community forums.

The ironic part of this rather dull story is that on this guys web site, who is an MVP, there was a search box for Google and also Google AdSense adverts.

Now I would have thought Microsoft would have rules to stop people doing things like that with the Big G!

Rise of the Live Brigade

Over the last two weeks, things have changed around these parts. I’ve upgraded to Vista on my PC – Vista Business SP! if were going to get technical which we will of course 🙂

Having upgraded to Vista, I’ve been more interested in some of the things Microsoft are doing at the moment – Yes it is possible for me to be more interested in something Microsoft are doing than I was previously!

Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 Review

A few days ago I saw that Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 was being made publicly available so I thoguht I would give it a stab and see if Microsoft had done any good with this, because I personally feel that IE7 wasn’t released all that long ago and there wasn’t really much need for a new browser jsut yet.

After getting it installed which was a bit of a polava due to needing to install a patch for Windows XP which didn’t want to install straight up, I couldn’t see too much difference, except for the fact that half of the internet doesn’t work properly.

Certified

After weeks of feeling nervous about doing my first exam for my Microsoft certification, the time has passed, and I’ve done the exam, however I am sad to say that I passed 🙂

So as of now, I am officially a Microsoft Certified Professional. Only about 8 more exams to go now!

My new PC arrived yesterday so I’ve started building that, which means that work will soon start on getting Baby-Green going properly again using the new design. I’m looking forward to it!
